The Video Games Museum in Heraklion, Crete, officially opened its doors to the public on January 1, 2025 under the claim ‘Preserving the Legacy of Video Games for Future Generations’. The museum is dedicated to showcasing the cultural and technological evolution of video games, featuring an extensive collection of over 300 gaming consoles and thousands of games.
Visitors can explore immersive spaces like the 1980s living room and 1990s kid’s bedroom, designed to transport them back in time. The museum’s first temporary exhibition, Choose Your Weapon, highlights the evolution of video game controllers, tracing their history through iconic designs.
As a nonprofit organization, the museum’s mission is to educate, inspire, and engage the public, from avid gamers to those curious about gaming history.

We are delighted to welcome the Video Games Museum from Heraklion as our first member from Greece,’ says Andreas Lange, COO of EFGAMP. ‘It shows that video games are now understood and communicated as a cultural asset throughout Europe. We also expect to be able to broaden our perspective to include another cultural region with interesting insights and experiences.

During the preparations for our opening, we were able to benefit from their experiences through discussions with many EFGAMP members,’ is Manolis Varouchas, founder of the Video Games Museum, describing his perspective. ‘In this respect, it was clear to us that we would also become a member in order to jointly tackle the challenges of preserving and communicating our digital game-based cultural heritage.
