‘ZKM – Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe’ becomes new member

ZKM

A warm welcome to our new member ZKM, which is one of the oldest and biggest memory institutions caring about games.

The ZKM was founded in 1989 with the mission of advancing the classical arts in the digital age: by granting artists access to digital technologies and, through exhibitions, events and publications, by creating a public space that gives all social actors the opportunity to discuss the aesthetic and social consequences and possibilities of technological transformations. The ZKM considers video games to be one of the most important formats of aesthetic expression of the present age. With the opening of the exhibition The World of Games in the fall of 1997, the ZKM was one of the first art institutions worldwide to give video games culture a permanent public platform in the art context. Since then, the ZKM has repeatedly redesigned the game presentation in a series of different exhibitions. The exhibition Games and Politics, which was conceived by the Goethe Institut together with the ZKM, has been traveling around the world since 2017.

Margit Rosen, chief archivist of the ZKM explains the reasons of entering EFGAMP: “The ZKM has special expertise in the preservation of complex digital objects. The exchange with the computer games community, which has been pioneering in this field, is of great importance for museums dedicated to digital culture, as the solution of technical and legal problems is crucial for the preservation of our digital cultural heritage.
